In 1983 she became the first American woman in space, the youngest astronaut in space, and the first (that we know of) gay astronaut. And in 1978 when NASA advertised for female recruits to Stanford students, Ride decided to be an astronaut. There she studied English and Physics, enthralled by both Shakespeare and lasers. Ride was a force, and she almost became a pro tennis player before deciding to attend college at Stanford instead. This is all Sally Ride ever wanted when she joined the NASA space program. You’re weightless, floating with no ground, and no support. Flying 200 to 350 miles from the earth, the stars are bright, the globe is massive, diverse, blue and bright.
